At Sparkle Plenty Designs, bling is our business, and while we enjoy the enthusiastic responses from customers the first time they see their design sparkle, it’s even more gratifying when a special design comes along that can have an impact on people’s lives.
That’s the case with Fly High Butterfly, a wonderfully inspired original design by Katelyn Joy Derstine.

Katelyn created the design as an expression of her deep faith and love of butterflies. Bordering the design, she wrote, “Once while I was struggling to climb, I asked God to give me a sign. A sign that would tell me You were thinking about me and still loving me…to give me the strength to keep climbing. He did…He gave me a Butterfly.”

Katelyn’s life was tragically cut short in June 2006 when she was killed in a car accident. A junior studying Environmental Horticulture at the University of Florida, Katelyn possessed many talents and touched many lives, but it was her love of butterflies that inspired her mother to create The Katelyn Joy Derstine Scholarship Fund, Inc., “Fly High Award”.
The Fly High Award is a financial scholarship awarded annually to qualifying female high school seniors who demonstrate character traits exemplified by Katelyn through their academic excellence and solid promise of continuing, life-long dedication to selflessness.

We, at Sparkle Plenty, are proud to be a part of this very special scholarship fund. In honor of Katelyn, we’ve designed a Swarovski crystal Fly High Butterfly shirt, available to all for purchase. The design is a replica of Katelyn’s original art, created entirely out of Swarovski crystals.
You can purchase the shirt HERE. If you are a retailer and would like to get involved in selling the shirts to raise funds, please contact us at 800-952-0446. Proceeds from the sale of the shirts will go to the fund, helping to further the education of promising students – something that would have meant the world to Katelyn.

Yes, a favorite for so many people, the magical movie, “The Wizard of Oz” celebrates its 70th – YES, 70th Anniversary in 2009.
Hmm..why a blog post about The Wizard of Oz, you may be wondering. Well, it’s all about the crystal. And we at Sparkle Plenty Designs totally understand that!
To help Dorothy step into the 21st century, Warner Bros. Consumer Products in partnership with CRYSTALLIZED™ Swarovski Elements, have invited the world’s top shoe designers to reinterpret Dorothy’s iconic Ruby Slippers for modern times.
The Wizard of Oz Ruby Slipper Collection will premiere at Saks Fifth Avenue, kicking off the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York (September 2009). The event will benefit philanthropic partner Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation and kick-off support for the Foundation’s annual Kids for Kids Family Carnival.
The designers, including Christian Louboutin, Diane Von Fürstenberg, Jimmy Choo, L.A.M.B. by Gwen Stefani, Manolo Blahnik, Moschino, Oscar de la Renta, Stuart Weitzman and many more, have been granted creative license and access to unlimited CRYSTALLIZED™ Swarovski Elements to re-imagine Dorothy’s design with their own modern vision of the sparkling Ruby Slipper.
Nadja Swarovski says, “We’re thrilled to turn fashion’s spotlight on the most iconic pair of shoes, Dorothy’s Ruby Slippers, to celebrate the 70th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz. As Hollywood’s premier crystal purveyor, Swarovski feels privileged to be a sparkling element of the original pair and now, we are looking forward to new creative interpretations of the Ruby Slipper for the 20th century by these talented designers.”
The Collection will also be showcased at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week’s Bryant Park tents in early September and at Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation’s Kids for Kids Family Carnival in New York City’s Park Avenue Armory Building on September 20th. Additional stops for the Collection include Miami Art Week, as well as multiple public viewings planned throughout 2009.
So, if you are a fan, save your pennies, or should I say dollars: the complete (original) Wizard of Oz Ruby Slipper Collection will be auctioned in the Fall of 2009, with proceeds benefiting the Elisabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation.
In the meantime, please take a look at our line of sparkly crystal goodies at Sparkle Plenty Designs. So, click your heels together and say “there’s no place like Sparkle Plenty!”
