Go for Bling!

GO FOR BLING — A VERY SPARKLY ARTICLE
as seen in Stitches Magazine

Rhinestone designs, like this one here from Sparkle Plenty Designs (asi/88442), are growing more popular, particularly with women.

First, dentists. Then, beauty salons. After that, plastic surgeons and others. What were they all after? Andrew Sequeira’s bling. Sequeira co-owns Sparkle Plenty Designs a Philadelphia-based apparel and accessory decorating company that focuses on rhinestones and crystals. The dentists, salons and plastic surgeons wanted the sparkling imprinting option to logo their staff’s apparel because they believed it would appeal to their predominantly female clientele, Sequeira says.

Indeed, the popularity of so-called “bling” decoration is growing among end-buyers who aim to cater to feminine tastes. Decorators who responded to a recent Stitches survey named rhinestones/crystals as the second most popular embellishment type with women; embroidery topped the list. In part because of their affordability, rhinestones are currently the most popular form of bling. “Some like more, some like less, but the unifying theme is they want something with sparkle that has a specifically feminine look,” Sequeira says.

If you want to capitalize on the bling trend, you’ll need to invest in a heat press. A reliable press intended for commercial use will cost you about $1,000. Next, you’ll need to decide if you want to buy rhinestone transfers from a provider or if you want to create your own transfers, which are then heat-applied. For beginners, it’s cheaper to buy the transfers, says Sequeira, since creating them in-house requires purchasing an expensive machine that sets stones on transfer films.

There’s a range of markets where bling is desired. “Number one has to be cheer and dance. They’re looking for outfits that promote the visual of their performance,” Sequeira says. The bridal market is big, too. “There’s a whole bunch of retail sites that do rhinestone and crystal for brides,” he says. Sequeira has also had success selling to school teams and various corporate clients. “In corporate, it’s fairly random; there’s no one trackable industry where it’s more popular than others,” he says. “Bling can work for any business or organization whose target audience is women.
